Adding Business Context to Compass AI
Once you've finished setting up your categories and connecting your data, it's time to add a bit more context to your business. Business context is what transforms Compass from a simple financial tracking tool into a knowledge base that understands your business goals, challenges and opportunities. This includes having an added element of information when running forecasts.
To start uploading your documents, simply navigate to the “Business Context” page through the main dashboard.
Note: Before uploading a file and adding their business context, users are first required to connect their bank account.

How Business Context Works

1. Upload Your Files

Start by adding relevant business documents such as:
  • Marketing plans and strategies
  • Budget spreadsheets and financial reports
  • Business plans and strategic documents

2. Analyzing Your Data

Once uploaded, Compass's AI system scans through your documents, extracting key information and identifying important patterns.

3. Contexts Are Created

The recognized information is automatically organized into three distinct types of business contexts:
  • Company Context – Overall business goals, challenges, strategic plans, mission, and company-wide initiatives.
  • Financial Context – Detailed information about financial categories like salary structures, office supply needs, software service subscriptions, and revenue models.
  • Account Context – Specific details about customers (pricing tiers, contract terms), vendors (payment schedules, services provided), and employees (roles, compensation).

4. Review and Refine

After the context is created, you can review and edit it to ensure nothing gets skipped over. You can also add new details, modify existing information, or remove parts that don't apply or are not relevant to your business.

5. AI Applies Contexts Across the Platform

Once your business context is in place, Compass's AI uses this information to create and run better, more accurate forecasts.

Creating Context Manually

Users oftentimes lack the proper structure due to time, budget and other constraints. This includes lacking proper business plans and documents that are necessary to push your business forward. To alleviate this, we’ve also decided to implement manual context creation:

1: Choose “Add New Context”

Navigate to the business context section and select "Add Context."

2: Choose the Context Level

Select whether you're adding:
  • Company context (business goals, strategic initiatives)
  • Financial context (category-specific information)
  • Account context (customer, vendor, or employee details)

3: Write Your Context

Provide specific details for your chosen context type. For example:
  • Financial Context – Revenue – Subscription Sales: "We offer a $49 monthly subscription plan with a 7-day free trial. 60% of our customers upgrade from our basic plan after 3 months. By the end of 2026, we aim for this number to reach somewhere between 85-90%."
  • Company Context – Growth Goals: "Our primary goal is to reach $1M ARR by Q4 2025 through expanding our fractional CFO customer base."
  • Account Context – Key Customer – TechCorp Inc: "Our largest client paying $500/month. Contract renews in June 2025. They typically increase usage 20% each quarter."
💡 Pro tip: The more specific and detailed your business context, the more intelligent and helpful Compass AI becomes.
Once your business context is all set up, Compass AI evolves from a financial tool into a knowledge base that understands not just your numbers, but the story behind them—using that context to make your AI assistant smarter and your what-if scenarios more relevant and accurate.
